We were clearly slowing down as we headed into the desert. Relaxation was much needed in Albuquerque. Our weary minds and bodies were so grateful to our kind friend James for inviting us to stay with him.
We started out with a nurturing meal at Thai Vegan and then television and the couch.
There were two dogs there that Niall, Sammy, and I loved instantly.
The next day, we ventured out to explore the Petroglyph National Monument, where one of the largest concentrations of rock carvings exists.
Butted against a crowded neighborhood of many modern adobe style houses, there is this barren park with a walking path to view petroglyphs. Practically in these Albuquerquerans’ backyards, there are hundreds of designs and symbols that were carved into volcanic rocks by Native Americans and Spanish settlers 400 to 700 years ago.
The sweet man at the visitor center was full of stories and knowledge. This trip has brought us many wonderful encounters with fascinating strangers.
These carvings were very important to the people who created them and they seem to have great spiritual significance. However, it is impossible to determine exactly what was meant by each of them. They sure make you wonder about the story behind each of them.
Can you spot the jackrabbit in the above photo? This guy was amazing and fast-moving.
