So, we went to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising, Michigan. It was amazing. We couldn’t afford to take one of the popular boat tours to see the rocks up close and personal, but that ended up being perfectly fine by us because there was still a great deal of beauty to behold.
We spent the afternoon at Falling Rock Cafe and Bookstore, due to rain. I loved their free refills of Michigan Cherry coffee. We asked the staff where to go to see the sunset and they steered us in the right direction towards Sand Point.
We were blown away by a double rainbow we encountered there.
Pictured Rocks includes a hundred miles of trails along Lake Superior’s shore. There are these incredible sandstone cliffs that border Lake Superior. These cliffs are many different shades of red, orange, brown, and gray, due to mineral stains made over time. The sand itself, as well as the pebbles that cover parts of the beaches are also multiple hues.
I would love to be in one of those kayaks down there, although from our free vantage point it was still extraordinary.
The nearby waterfalls were also stunning – especially the big Miners Falls pictured above. We went on a short hike in the green woods to get to this fifty foot cascading beauty.
We also hiked to see the old, isolated Au Sable Light Station and found some shipwreck remains. The lighthouse was built in 1873-74 because of all of the ships that had wrecked in previous years.
Also, I must mention the chipmunks. In Michigan, we saw them almost as often as we saw squirrels in Chicago. They are so very cute.
All this time, we had no idea Michigan was so breathtaking.
